Epitel, Inc., a leader in AI-driven wireless brain health technologies, today announced the appointment of medical device finance veteran Melissa Farina as Chief Financial Officer. Ms. Farina joins Epitel at a period of significant growth for the company, following its recent Series B financing and selection by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as one of the first participants in the agency’s READI-Home Innovation Challenge.
Ms. Farina brings more than 20 years of finance leadership experience across public and private medical device companies, with a track record spanning financial strategy, capital allocation, M&A and commercial growth. Most recently, Ms. Farina served as Chief Financial Officer of Conformal Medical, where she led multiple equity financings and ultimately the successful acquisition of the company by W. L. Gore & Associates (Gore). She also spent time at LivaNova, a global leader in drug-resistant epilepsy treatment, giving her deep experience in brain health. Ms. Farina holds an MBA from Rice University and a BSBA in Finance from Bryant University. At Epitel, Ms. Farina will lead the company’s financial strategy and operations as it deploys its recent financing, expands the commercial adoption of REMI and builds the financial infrastructure to support a growing organization.
“The decision to appoint Melissa as our first Chief Financial Officer reflects the growth opportunity in front of Epitel. We have the technology, the regulatory foundation and the capital to fundamentally change how and where EEG is delivered. Now we are building the team to deliver on that opportunity,” said Steve Pacelli, President and Chief Executive Officer of Epitel. “Melissa understands what it takes to turn breakthrough medical technology into a durable business, and she brings the financial leadership and medtech experience to help us build that at Epitel.”
Epitel is addressing a significant gap in neurological care: while 3.4 million Americans are affected by epilepsy each year, 40 percent lack access to EEG. The REMI® portfolio extends EEG beyond the traditional hospital setting through wireless, wearable sensors that enable extended-duration brain monitoring at home during everyday activities. REMI Vigilenz™ AI for Event Detection analyzes EEG data to flag potential seizures for clinician review, helping capture objective evidence of rare and unpredictable events that can otherwise take months to identify. With five FDA 510(k) clearances across its wireless EEG monitoring and AI-driven technologies, Epitel is expanding access to neurological monitoring across care settings and patient populations.
“I’ve spent much of my career in medical devices, including many years working in epilepsy and seizure care, so Epitel’s mission to improve access to EEG monitoring and advance neurological care immediately resonated with me,” said Ms. Farina. “I’m drawn to companies at the point where strong technology and clinical evidence are ready to translate into broader adoption and patient access. Epitel is there today, and I’m looking forward to bringing my experience to a team that has the potential to redefine how neurological care is delivered.”
Medical Device Industry Veteran James Reinstein Appointed Chair of the Board of Directors
Epitel has also named James Reinstein as Chair of the Board with unanimous support, following his recent appointment to the company’s Board of Directors. Outgoing Chair Joshua Phillips, Managing Partner of Catalyst Health Ventures and Epitel’s Chair since 2022, remains an active member of the Board.
Mr. Reinstein, General Partner at Palo Alto Medtech Advisors, has spent his career bringing new medical technologies from early adoption into everyday clinical practice, serving in executive and board leadership roles across multiple emerging medical device companies. Mr. Reinstein previously served as President and CEO of Conformal Medical, where he worked alongside Ms. Farina and led the company through its acquisition by Gore. His extensive operating and commercial leadership, along with his experience in epilepsy, will help guide Epitel as the company expands REMI’s reach to clinicians and patients who currently have limited or no access to EEG.
“Epitel has spent years building technology that can fundamentally change how patients access EEG. What drew me to Epitel is that REMI isn’t simply a better version of an existing medical device. It changes where EEG can be used and how long patients can be monitored, with the potential to make an essential neurological test available to people who have historically had limited access to it,” said Mr. Reinstein. “I’ve spent much of my career helping guide medical device companies through that transition, and I look forward to bringing that experience to the Board as we support the leadership team in building on what Epitel has created and expanding access to brain health technologies for patients and communities that need them most.”
